What we offer
Evil.twin.education delivers a diverse range of workshops. Detailed below are a few examples but more bespoke workshops can also be made. The examples below just scratch the surface of what is possible within film making and animation;
2D Animation.
We can teach traditional hand drawn animation (similar to older Disney films) or digital animation using Flash, Toonboom, or After Effects.
3D Animation.
Using Cinema 4D an industry standard piece of software used in Spider-man and the 3D animation Open Season, we can cover everything from simple modelling and texturing right through to animated shorts.
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WL23NVfm2zc
for an example of a recent 3D short evil.twin.education project produced with young people.
3D animation can also help young people understand coordinates, degrees, shapes, gravity and many other aspects of Science and Mathematics. 3D animation is also the key for modern engineering and industrial designers, allowing them to test prototypes on the computer before physically producing them.
Games Creation
Programming games, from the very basic to advanced involves many disciplines. In all modern games physics and mathematics are an essential part of any interactive experience. Games creation is suitable for longer projects and can be taught at all levels.
Scratch Games
Scratch game making software is free to download and an incredibly useful entry level tool for teaching basic programming. As they create and share Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also learning to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively. This is beginner level programming suitable for students 8 and up.
Flash Games
Online web games are produced in Flash. It is the industry standard package for web design, animation and gaming. This is an intermediary programming level suitable for students 12 and up.
iPhone Apps
As Official Apple Developers we can develop games and applications for the iPhone and other platforms. This is an advanced programming language suitable for ages 14 and up.
Film Making
We offer a full experience in film making from simple Digital Video techniques to using full blown professional equipment. Good for all skill levels and interest as the first thing we teach is the full scope of filmmaking, pointing the camera in a certain direction being only a small part of it.
Music
Sound Fx
Experienced sound fx engineers can take young people through all the steps involved in creating a complete dolby surround sound experience. Sound is 50% of any film and while overlooked is important in bringing the moving image to life.
Score
Skilled musicians with broadcast credits with work with young people creating theme tunes and musical scores that can tell a story as well as any visual medium.
Web Design
Using professional software young people can develop their own websites based on a particular project they are working on at school, utilising the information they have learned in the classroom and making their own decisions on how to display the information.
Digital Story Telling.
Developing a story is hard to describe in a paragraph, but we discuss young people’s favourite films, cartoons and stories to see what subjects they like and use this as a starting point. We can also develop ideas from themes that are based around their current school lessons. We emphasise storytelling as a key skill throughout our projects.
Character Design.
When characters are designed, it is important to think as well as draw. The physical representation on screen can have as much an impact on viewers as what they say or do. We analyse iconic designs such as Mickey Mouse and Bart Simpson amongst others and help young people understand the importance of silhouettes, colour and style. Another important aspect of character design is understanding who the character is, their history, personality and motives.
Storyboarding.
This can be a part of other sessions or as a stand alone subject. Storyboarding focuses on creating a visual plan for the story (similar to a comic). It encourages collaboration and team work, decision making and the analysis of how the characters are viewed and what emotions this can convey and elicit. There must be a reason for every drawing and therefore a great deal of thought must go into each line.
Digital Painting
Using Photoshop and digital drawing tablets, young people have infinite possibilities for painting. They can paint on a blank digital canvas or use pre-designed images and reference material, working vocationally learning how a designer would use the equipment, providing them with the skills to go through the decision making process themselves.
Editing
Using industry standard software such as Final Cut Pro, we can take young people through all the steps involved in creating an end product of broadcast quality.
Compositing.
We generally use After Effects for compositing. This can take different media such as live action film and computer generated images and combine them to look as though they are in the same scene, the software is industry standard and is used in shows such as Doctor Who. The key is to focus on colour, colour perspective, linear perspective, grain and light.
